Today’s Standing Stones

Standing Stones in the Bible

In Old Testament times, when God wanted His people to remember an event or a place, he would have them erect standing stones. They would bring large stones and stack them into a pillar. This would make a memorial that would commemorate that event or place for generations to come. I just read about this in my morning time this week. After the children of Israel crossed the Jordan, God commanded Joshua to have the people create a memorial.

Then Joshua called the twelve men, whom he had prepared of the children of Israel, out of every tribe a man:

And Joshua said unto them, Pass over before the ark of the Lord your God into the midst of Jordan, and take you up every man of you a stone upon his shoulder, according unto the number of the tribes of the children of Israel:

That this may be a sign among you, that when your children ask their fathers in time to come, saying, What mean ye by these stones?

Then ye shall answer them, That the waters of Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord; when it passed over Jordan, the waters of Jordan were cut off: and these stones shall be for a memorial unto the children of Israel for ever. Joshua 4:4-7 KJV

Why did God ask the children of Israel several times to stack stones to remember events by? God knew they would forget. He didn’t want them to forget the mighty acts that He did for them. Not only did he want them to remember the event or place, He wanted their children to see the standing stones and ask what they were for. When they did, the parents could tell them what great act God had done there.

Remembering by Writing It Down

Over two thousand years later, God no longer asks us to put up standing stones. Yet, He wants us to remember when He works on our behalf. Here’s the problem, though: we’re forgetful. We quickly forget what God did for us in one season of life. Maybe He comes through in a big way financially for us. Later, we face a similar situation, and we automatically fear that God won’t come through for us. How many times do we fear the same thing over and over again? Yet God comes through every time.

Often, we forget what God has done in the past simply because we don’t write it down. There’s something about writing things down that helps it to stick with us. It’s often been said…

The shortest pencil is longer than the longest memory.

If we want to remember something, we need to write it down. If we want to remember how God worked for us in the past, we must write it down. What’s the best way to do that? Journaling.

Journaling

I am a huge advocate of journaling. That’s why I created the Faithfully Stepping Journal. Every morning, the first thing I do in my journal is to write down what I am thankful for. Every day I have a chance to record what God did for me the day before. Most days it’s not something huge. But the times when God does come through in a big way, I write it down the next morning in my journal.

When I get discouraged, I simply flip through the pages of my journal. It reminds me of all the good God has done for me, whether that be something little or something huge. Whenever I finish a journal, I flip back through it and remind myself once again of all that God did for me during the past six months.

What’s really fun is to find an old journal from several years ago and flip through it. I am reminded of so many blessings. The blessings range from small to huge…the baby finally slept through the night, the kids are feeling better today, a new family joined the church, we received a check in the mail, Malachi got saved yesterday.

Getting into the habit of writing down God’s blessings every day helps so that you don’t miss any, whether they are big or small.

A Pen and a Journal

We no longer have to build standing stones. We simply have to pick up a pen and a journal. When we remember all the ways that God has provided for us and blessed us in the past, it is much easier to trust Him with the future.

How to Prepare My Heart for a Difficult Season of Life

My Flowers

My sister-in-law brought me these beautiful flowers for my table on Sunday. I’m not sure what happened, but the next day… well, you can see the picture. One of them was blossoming, and the other was completely dead. I didn’t do anything to them but put them in water. I would have said it was the heat that killed them, but one was doing just fine.

There was no difference in the circumstances around the flowers. They were bought at the same time, from the same store. They were placed in the same vase and shared the same water. So why is it that one thrived and one died?

Two People in Similar Circumstances

Why is it that two people can have the same set of circumstances, yet one person crumbles while another shines? I think we’ve all known people on both sides in this scenario. We watch as the hardest circumstances come at one person, and they handle it with grace and strength. We stand back and watch in awe of God’s grace in and through their lives. We’ve also watched someone else go through difficult circumstances and absolutely crumble. They lose their faith; they become angry and bitter, only a shell of their former self.

What’s Inside Makes the Difference

What makes the difference? It’s what was inside that made all the difference. In the flower that died, there must have been some sort of sickness that I couldn’t see that was affecting the flower. Similarly, we can’t see what’s in people’s hearts; we can only see the outflow. It’s what is inside that comes out in difficult times. Two people may look the same on the outside, but once they are in the midst of a difficult season, it may be that two very different people are revealed.

What is inside our hearts is going to come out when difficult circumstances come. Solomon tells us in Proverbs to carefully guard our heart. The state of our heart will determine the course of our life.

Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life. Proverbs 4:23 KJV

Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life. Proverbs 4:23 NLT

Doing a Heart Check-Up

Sometimes we need to do an internal checkup to see how we are doing. If we look okay to everyone else, but our heart is filled with anger, fear, pride, greed, jealousy, shame… it’s going to come out when we are placed in difficult circumstances. It just will. Hard times have a way of showing us who we really are.

When we went through our difficult season, I had a front-row seat to see what was truly in my heart. I was surprised to see the anger, fear, and lack of faith that came spilling out. Because of those circumstances, though, I was able to see where I truly was. I could then begin to take steps to change my ways and thoughts, and ultimately my heart.

Developing a Healthy Heart

So how do we develop a healthy heart? How do we strengthen our heart to be ready for a difficult season or a time of testing?

One of My Faithfully Stepping Journals
  • Stay accountable each day for your sins. If we keep a short account of our sins, we won’t get far from God. It’s when we let stuff go that sin builds up in our hearts and we find ourselves far away from God.
  • Spend time doing things that strengthen our hearts and put them in a healthy place. Read good books that help you grow spiritually. Listen to preaching and Christian leaders on podcasts.

When we actively take care of our heart, we prepare ourselves to be ready for whatever tests or seasons of difficulty that lie ahead. We establish a deep relationship with God that will get us through so that we can look back and see that we did well during our season of testing.

Getting Through this Season of Rainy Days

Rainy Days

It’s a dreary, rainy day as I sit here and write this post. I am definitely one of those people who is affected by the weather. On sunny days, I feel ready to work hard and get a lot accomplished. A rainy day? Not so much. I have learned to appreciate rainy days, though, because it helps me enjoy the sunny days so much more.

But sometimes, rainy days are just depressing. Sometimes they make you feel sad and discouraged. So here’s my encouragement for today. It comes right from Eeyore, from Winnie the Pooh.

picture of rain falling
A. A. Milne

The rain has to stop falling eventually. At some point, the rain will stop, the clouds will roll back, and the sun will come out once again.

A Season of Difficulty

You may be in a difficult season right now where it feels like the rain just won’t stop falling. You need the sun to shine, but all you see are rainy dreary days. That’s a difficult place to be, and my heart goes out to you. You have no hope that things are going to be okay. Maybe your heart is broken, and you don’t feel like it’s ever going to heal. Maybe you’re in a season of depression, and you can’t seem to move past it.

Sometimes life knocks us to our knees. It’s during those times that we need God the most, yet it’s often the hardest time to find Him.

If you’re are in a difficult season right now, I want to encourage you with three simple reminders.

1. God Loves You

It’s so simple, yet so often we forget. Let me be the one to remind you that God loves you. He loves you for who you are, not who you want to be. The flaws and imperfections that you see are what make you special to Him. He created you perfectly, and you bring immense joy to Him.

Oh yes, you shaped me first inside, then out; you formed me in my mother’s womb.

You know me inside and out, you know every bone in my body;

You know exactly how I was made, bit by bit, how I was sculpted from nothing into something. Psalm 139:13, 15 MSG

Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. John 15:33 KJV

For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,

Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:38,39 KJV

There is no greater way to know that God loves us than to remember He gave His very life for us. Paul also reminds us in Romans that absolutely nothing can separate us from God’s love. His love for us is so powerful that there is nothing that we can do or anybody else can do to remove His love from us.

2. God Is For You

In the midst of hard times, it is so hard to see that God is for you. In a time where everything seems to be against you, it’s hard to see that God is working for your good. During difficult times in my life, I have the hardest time believing God is for me. He feels so far away. It doesn’t feel like He’s doing anything to help me.

It’s during these times that Satan whispers to us that God is giving us “what we deserve.” He leads us to believe that God is punishing us, that He doesn’t care about us or what happens to us. These are all lies. We need to focus on truth instead. The truth is that God is working in every detail of our lives to bring about His plan for our lives.

As for God, his way is perfect: the word of the Lord is tried: he is a buckler to all those that trust in him.

It is God that girdeth me with strength, and maketh my way perfect. Psalm 18:30,32

3. God Hasn’t Forgotten You

This is usually what I need to hear the most in trying times. So let me be the one to remind you of this truth today. God has not forgotten you. He knows exactly what you are going through. He sees the hurt and the pain and understands the confusion, the doubt, and the fear. You may feel that He is so far away but know this. God is acutely aware of what you are going through. He hasn’t left you to go through this on your own. He reminds us of this truth in Hebrews.

…I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. Hebrews 13:5 KJV

God has promised that He will never leave us. When it feels the darkest, when it feels like God is far away, remember that God is with you.

One of my favorite Bible stories is the story of the disciples in a storm. Mark 6 gives us the account of the disciples being stuck in a storm. They were on a ship when a ferocious storm came upon them. It must have been really bad because these were seasoned fishermen. They were used to being out on the water. Whatever they saw in the storm terrified them.

Jesus comes to them in the midst of their storm. Then he steps into the boat with them. Jesus didn’t leave them to suffer through the storm alone. No, He came to them in their darkest hour and stepped into the boat with them.

That’s how I know God hasn’t forgotten you. In the midst of your storm, He will come to you and step into your storm with you. He may not make the storm stop, but He will keep you safe in the midst of it.

The Rainy Days Will Eventually Go Away

The rain will stop falling eventually. You will come to the end of this difficult season. At some point, the clouds will roll away, and the sun will shine brightly once more. Until then, remember that God loves you, He is for you, and He hasn’t forgotten you.

Book Suggestion

A great book to read during this season is It’s Not Supposed to Be This Way by Lisa TerKeurst. If anyone has a reason to complain and feel like God has forgotten them, it’s Lisa. She shares her story openly and with vulnerability in her book. I promise it will encourage your heart.

Remembering What Makes America Great

God Bless the USA Video

I was reminded yesterday of what it is that makes America great. Matt showed me this youtube video yesterday of an arrangement of God Bless the USA. It was amazing and brought tears to my eyes. Our family gathered on the couch to watch it on the tv. Even the kids sat quietly as we watched it. It was such a good reminder for me. Our nation has been so divided, and it’s easy to focus on that.

Remembering What We’re Celebrating

This weekend is a good time to remember just what it is we are celebrating. We celebrate our freedom as a country, as the United States of America. People say that they’re ashamed to be an American. That shouldn’t be. We get so focused on the negative that we forget to look for God’s blessings. God has blessed this country. We have so many freedoms that other countries don’t have. If we focus on all the negative, we will fail to see God’s goodness and blessing.

When we do that, Satan has us right where he wants us. Satan wants us divided. If we can fight with each other, treat people unfairly, and forget to love those around us, then Satan can waltz his way in and destroy our homes, our schools, our churches, and ultimately our nation.

What Makes America Great

Let’s remember what makes America great- its people. All of us together is what makes America great.

A Nation’s Strength

William Ralph Emerson

What makes a nation’s pillars high
And its foundations strong?
What makes it mighty to defy
The foes that round it throng?

It is not gold. Its kingdoms grand
Go down in battle shock;
Its shafts are laid on sinking sand,
Not on abiding rock.

Is it the sword? Ask the red dust
Of empires passed away;
The blood has turned their stones to rust,
Their glory to decay.

And is it pride? Ah, that bright crown
Has seemed to nations sweet;
But God has struck its luster down
In ashes at his feet.

Not gold but only men can make
A people great and strong;
Men who for truth and honor’s sake
Stand fast and suffer long.

Brave men who work while others sleep,
Who dare while others fly…
They build a nation’s pillars deep
And lift them to the sky.

Celebrating Each Other

So when we gather this weekend with friends and family to celebrate, let’s not forget to thank God for the freedoms He’s given is. Let’s not forget to say a prayer of protection around our armed forces. Let’s spend a few minutes being thankful for the men and women who have given their lives for our great country. But most of all, let’s choose to celebrate each other. We are the strongest when we come together. Let’s celebrate our family, friends, neighbors, church family… the people we do life with.
